How to check the heating element of a washing machine with a multimeter

Calculator for calculating the power of the heating element for heating water

The proposed calculator, based on the capacity of the water heater tank, the initial and final (required) water temperature and heating time, makes it possible to calculate the required electrical power of the heating element with a sufficient degree of accuracy, which is influenced by the design features of the heating element and the actual voltage of the mains.

When the voltage in the network is lower than Uoperating the heater (for example, as a result of a voltage drop in the line), it is obvious that its operation will be less efficient and a decrease in the temperature of the heating surface will increase the duration of water heating to the required temperature.

The result of the calculation does not mean that the mandatory use of a heating element of such a rating: the received power can be recruited by several parallel-connected heating elements.

Please note that the calculation is made without taking into account the possible heat loss of electric water heaters to the environment, arising from a variety of factors, from the design of the boiler to the state (presence) of thermal insulation

Tips: how to find out the power of the heating element

In most cases, TENACs indicate their power, but there are other cases. But this is an important parameter of the device that you need to know in order to measure the resistance or replace the heater. Indeed, when buying a heater in a store, one of the selection criteria is precisely the power.

To determine the power of the heating element, you will need:

  1. Multimeter.
  2. The current value of the heating element during operation, obtained by measuring with a multimeter.
  3. Calculate the power value using the formula - current multiplied by voltage. The voltage value is standard for residential premises 220V.

The final value of the power of the heating element, obtained when transferring from the calculated one, is important. According to the formula, the power is obtained in watts, but in electrical appliances it is indicated in kilowatts

In such a simple and simple way, you can measure the power of many other electrical appliances or elements, while not having an electrical engineering education at all.

How to check the heating element with a multimeter yourself

The main breakdown of household appliances is considered to be the failure of the heating element. If the washing machine does not heat the water during washing or the iron spiral does not heat up, then the heating element needs to be called with a multimeter. In this article, we have presented to your attention information on how to check the heating element with a multimeter at home.

Also in our article you will find detailed pictures and videos that will explain each process in detail. If you are interested, then you can read about how to properly drain the water from the boiler.

How to check the heating element

First, you need to consider how the heating element is dialed. To make it clear to you, we tried to delve into the practical moments. You can check the heating element according to the following scheme:

  1. Before testing, you should try to calculate the resistance. To perform the calculation, you can use the formula R = U2 / P. In this formula, U will mean the voltage in your article. Indicator P is the rated power of the heating element, which can be found in the passport of the device.
  2. Before checking, the device must be disconnected from the power supply. Only then can you start checking.
  3. Now turn on the multimeter in resistance test mode.

If you don't know how to use a multimeter, then don't worry. Our website already has information on how to use a multimeter correctly. If you touch the pin with the probes, then you may encounter the following situations:

  1. If the value on your screen is approximately the same as in the picture, then this means that the heating element is operational.
  2. If “0” is displayed, then it means that the device needs to be replaced.
  3. Indicator "1" will mean that there was a network break during the test.

Also, using a multimeter, you need to check the heating element for breakdown. For this to work, the device must be set to buzzer mode. You need to touch one of the probes to the output, and the other to the heating element. In the photo below you can see how to properly check the heating element for breakdown.

It's important to know! If the buzzer beeps, then it is necessary to replace the part. You can also perform an insulation resistance test if required

It is easy to do this and for this you need to switch the device to the "500 V" range. Normal resistance will be 0.5 Mohm. Detailed information on how to check the heating element with a megohmmeter and a multimeter can be seen in the video below:

How is the heating element of the washing machine checked?

The most important difficulty when checking a washing machine heater is that it is quite difficult to find it - especially for many modern units, the internal structure of which is rather confusing. Most often, the heating element in washing machines is located near the back cover, just below the loading tank. However, in some models it is installed from the front, and in machines with top loading, electric heaters are often located on one of the sides.

How to check (ring) ten?

Checking the heating element of the washing machine has another nuance - these heating elements are equipped with three outputs, and when checking, you need to connect to only two of them, and it is important not to confuse these contacts. Usually the terminals to which you need to connect (zero and phase) are located at the edges, and between them there is a ground contact, which does not matter for verification

Otherwise, the diagnosis of the heating element of the washing machine is carried out in accordance with the above instructions.

The amount of electricity kWh and the cost of heating water.

The calculator will calculate the time for heating water in storage water heaters, depending on the capacity of the tank, the power of the heating elements, the heating temperature and the temperature of the incoming water.

You can specify the efficiency of the storage water heater (usually 95-99%).

The calculator is taken from the site: https://nagrev24.ru/voda

Electricity is converted into heat and the efficiency depends on the material of the heating element (on electricity losses in it and on thermal conductivity), on the contact area of the element with water, contact resistances and losses in the power supply cord. At each stage, some of the energy is lost. Depending on the type of device, the efficiency is in the range of 95-99%.

The more effective the thermal insulation properties of the material separating the inner tank from the environment, and the thicker its layer, the more economical the water heater. Modern boilers guarantee a decrease in water temperature of no more than 0.25 - 0.5 degrees per hour and an electricity consumption of less than 1 kW / h per day in standby mode.

The most optimal operating temperature of the water heater is 55-60 ° C. This reduces energy consumption for maintaining the temperature of hot water, reduces the formation of limescale, and provides a more gentle mode for the internal tank.

Checking the heating element of the washing machine

Before you check the heating element of the washing machine with a multimeter, you still need to find it - with this, many people have certain difficulties, which especially concerns modern models of machines with a cunning internal structure. In most cases, the heater in the washing machine is located slightly below its tank, closer to the back cover.

In some models, it is installed on the side of the front cover. Top-loading washing machines can be supplied with elements located on one of the sides.

When checking, you should know to which contacts of the heating element you need to connect. The fact is that the tubular electric heating element of the washing machine has three outputs, of which only two are needed for testing. As a rule, a grounding contact is located in the center, while the two extreme ones (zero and phase) are the terminals necessary for checking.

To test the heating element of the washing machine, you must follow the instructions given earlier. The normal resistance value for the heating element of a standard washing machine varies between 25-60 ohms, small deviations are possible.

General data required for calculations

The more powerful the electric heater, the faster it heats up a given amount of water. Therefore, devices for this parameter are selected in accordance with the tasks, the required volume and the allowable waiting time. So, for example, heating 15 liters to 60 ° C with a 1.5 kW heater will take about one and a half hours. However, for large volumes (for example, to fill a 100-liter bath) with a reasonable waiting time (up to 3 hours), a 3 kW more powerful device will be needed to bring the liquid to a comfortable temperature.

To fully calculate the estimated power, a number of parameters must be taken into account:

Instructions: how to ring a wire without a tester

Not every home has a set of tools and devices for checking the performance of electrical engineering. But what to do in this case if you urgently need to check the electrical appliance or wiring for integrity?

There are several alternative ways to test the wire without using a tester:

  1. With a light bulb. The light bulb is connected to the mains and current is supplied to it. If the circuit is broken, the light will not light up.
  2. In the same way, a sound device can be connected to the circuit, instead of a light bulb. Accordingly, it will make a sound if the circuit is working properly.
  3. If you need to check a wire element that is not connected to the network, a battery and a low-power lamp are used.

One end of the wire is connected to one of the terminals of the battery or accumulator, the other to the light bulb. It is also necessary to lead a whole conductor from the light bulb to the second terminal of the battery. If the battery and the lamp are working, and the conductor is selected whole, it should light up if the tested section of the wire is not broken. There is also a way that professional electricians use - ringing the wires using special handsets.

How to check the heating element with a multimeter and without a tester

A popular malfunction of household appliances and heaters is the failure of the heating element. If your washing machine does not heat the water during washing or the iron spiral does not heat up at home, be sure to ring this circuit element with a tester. In this article, we will tell you how to check the heating element with a multimeter at home, and also provide several useful video instructions on the topic.

Verification technology

First of all, we will consider how the heating element is dialed, after which we will delve deeper into practically the moments associated with the repair of household appliances. So, you can check the heating element according to the following scheme:

  1. Calculate the resistance of the heater. To do this, use the formula: R = U2 / P, where U is the voltage in the network (220 volts), and P is the rated power of the heating element, which can be found in the passport of the device.
  2. Next, be sure to disconnect the device under test from the mains, get to the heating element and disconnect the wires from it.
  3. Turn the multimeter into resistance measurement mode (200 Ohm range) and touch the probes to the terminals, as shown in the photo below:

  • The value on the scoreboard is about the same as the calculated one, which indicates the efficiency of the heating element.
  • "0" is displayed, which means short circuit, replacement is required.
  • "1" or infinity is displayed - an open circuit has occurred, the heater needs to be replaced.

You also need to check the heating element for breakdown (current leakage) using a multimeter. To do this, we transfer the device to the buzzer mode, with one probe we touch the output, and the other with the body of the heating element, as shown in the photo below:

The buzzer sounded - there is a breakdown, which means that you cannot do without replacing the part.

It is also advisable to check the insulation resistance of the heating element with a megohmmeter. To do this, you need to include it in the "500 V" measurement range. With one probe, touch the contact of the heater, with the second one touch the body of the electrical appliance. An insulation resistance of more than 0.5 megohms is considered normal.

You can learn more about how to check the heating element with a megohmmeter and a multimeter by watching the video data:

The work of the master

Continuity scheme

By the way, also, before making a dial-up, you need to visually check the condition of the heating element. To do this, remove scale from the heating element and inspect the surface for bulges, cracks and other mechanical damage. If any, the part must be replaced.

Another way to test the heater for an open circuit is to use an electrician's test lamp. For this, zero is supplied to one contact of the heating element from the network, and to the second phase through this lamp. If the light is on, then there is no break. Anyone can make a control lamp from the available means, we wrote about this in detail in the article we referred to.

Here, in fact, are all the ways to check the integrity of the heating element. As you can see, in some cases it is possible to check the heating element even without a multimeter. Below we will look at a video that clearly explains how to ring the heater of a washing machine, boiler, dishwasher, kettle and other household appliances.

Checking the heating element of the water heater using a tester

There are many ways. Most often, a method is used in which the verification is carried out using a special tester. Before checking, you need to calculate the resistance for the installed boiler.

Calculation formula: R = U * U / P, where:

  • U - This is a constant, equal to 220 volts.
  • P - This is the power of the device, you can find it out in the boiler operating manual or on the factory sticker, which is located at the bottom of the boiler or on the back.

Using a multimeter

The multimeter has a checkbox that can be rotated 360 degrees and choose to test any function. It needs to be turned to measure a resistance of 200 ohms. The multimeter contacts should be connected to the heating element connection. If the water heater rings, that is, it is completely serviceable, then the screen will show the same value that was calculated earlier using the formula.

If the display shows zero, one or an infinity sign, then this indicates some kind of breakdown, for example, a short circuit, a rupture. In this case, you will have to change the part, the repair will not work.

Breakdown of heating element

Next, you need to check the boiler itself for a breakdown of the case, it is even easier to do this. The checkbox must be turned to ring the buzzer. The first contact of the multimeter must be connected to the tubular electric heater, and the second to the shell of the water heater or the ground terminal.

If the multimeter began to beep, then this indicates a breakdown of the case, therefore, in this case, it is absolutely impossible to touch the boiler itself, since an electric shock may occur, not fatal, but quite strong.

Using a megohmmeter

Its flag must be turned towards 50 volts, one contact must be connected to the contact of the heating element, and the second to the body. If a value of more than 0.5 Mohm appears on the megohmmeter display, then the water heater is fully operational.

Instantaneous water heaters

When calculating the amount of heat for heating running water, it is necessary to take into account the difference in voltage standards in Russia (220 V) and Europe (230 V), since a significant part of electric water heaters are manufactured by Western European companies. Thanks to this difference, the nominal indicator of 10 kW in such a device when connected to a Russian 220V network will be 8.5% less - 9.15.

The maximum hydraulic flow V (in liters per minute) with given power characteristics W (in kilowatts) is calculated by the formula: V = 14.3 * (W / t 2 -t 1), in which t 1 and t 2 are the temperatures at the inlet heater and as a result of heating, respectively.

Approximate power characteristics of electric water heaters in relation to household needs (in kilowatts):

  • 4-6 - only for washing hands and dishes,
  • 6-8 - for taking a shower,
  • 10-15 - for washing and showering,
  • 15-20 - for the complete water supply of an apartment or private house.

The choice is complicated by the fact that the heaters are available in two connection options: to a single-phase (220 V) and three-phase (380 V) network. However, heaters for a single-phase network, as a rule, are not available above 10 kilowatts.

Checking the heater with a tester

The instruction on how to check the heating element of a washing machine with a multimeter correctly is quite simple. To do this, first remove all wires from its terminals for the reliability of the instrument readings. You do not need to twist and get anything. The check is done in 3 steps:

First step

We set the resistance measurement mode on the multimeter in the 200 Ohm range. And before checking the heating element with a tester, we short-circuit the probes together to make sure that it is accurate. The reading on the display should be 0 or close to zero. Next, we touch one probe to the left terminal of the heating element, and the second to the right terminal. The middle terminal (or fixing bolt) is always ground. We do not touch it yet, as we are checking the integrity of the heating coil.

This is calculated using a simple formula:

R = U² / P, where "U" is the voltage in the network (220 V), and "P" is the power of the heating element (in our example, 1900 W).

In the same way, you can determine the power of the heating element, knowing only its resistance and mains voltage:

P = U² / R.

In the case when the device shows "1" (infinity), this means a break in the coil inside the heater. And if the screen displays "0", then the heating element is closed (short-circuited). In both cases, you will have to buy a new heater. Its power and dimensions must be identical.

It is advisable to rearrange the native thermal sensor from the old one to the new heating element, if it is serviceable. Or buy with the same resistance. It is usually written on the side of the plastic socket. Using a multimeter, you can make sure that it is working properly by measuring the resistance on two contacts. If you dip the temperature sensor in hot water, then it should change its resistance.

Second step

We set the multimeter in the mode of continuity of diodes or "buzzer". When the probes are closed, a working device will squeak, and zeros will be displayed on the screen, which indicates the presence of a circuit.

We touch one probe to the right or left terminal of the heating element, and with the second probe to the body or the grounding terminal. This is done in order to determine if the heater is punching into the housing. If the multimeter beeps, it punches. Teng needs to be replaced, because of this, the machine may be shocked or not start at all. If the tester is silent, then everything is in order.

Final actions

Set the device to the resistance measurement mode at the highest range available. Ideally, use a megohmmeter. Do the same as in the previous point. Try not to touch the test leads of the device with your hands during the measurement.

This is necessary to test the insulation of the heating element for leakage current. After all, if there is even the slightest microcrack through which the current leaves, then very soon it will become larger and the heater will break through. In addition, if an RCD is installed in the house, it will constantly work and turn off the power grid.

If the readings of the device are less than 2 mOhm, then it is better to replace the heating element immediately. The permissible insulation resistance is considered to be more than 2 mΩ. It is recommended to ring the circuit and check its insulation resistance in the store before buying a new heating element.

Possible malfunctions

The heating element is the most vulnerable element in the boiler. The reason is that it is the most exploited element, and in addition, it is exposed to scale. To prolong its life, it is recommended to periodically clean it. This can be done without completely disassembling the case using special tools. But I recommend carrying out a full set of procedures to clean not only the heater, but also the tank itself from scale and dirt.

If the node is broken, then it will have to be changed, but first check what exactly is out of order. There are several types of faults:

  • The incandescent thread inside the heating element has burnt out.
  • The glow wire on the heater body has burned out. This can lead to electric shock if the water heater is not equipped with an RCD. Otherwise, the protective mechanism will constantly turn off the equipment.
  • Scale appearing.

Possible malfunctions of heating elements

Problems can also be associated with the filler of the tube.In the center of the heating element, the spiral is held due to the fact that the tube is tightly packed with quartz sand. However, if the filler is poorly compacted or insufficient, the spiral moves to the side and can touch the surface of the tube.

However, the heating element will not lose its performance, and any heating device will continue to work if the spiral touches only one point, and there is no ground wire and RCD connection in the apartment wiring. True, one cannot ignore the fact that if the equipment has a metal case, there is a possibility that a phase will fall on it. Accordingly, there is a possibility of electric shock to a person if he touches this case.

But the heating element will completely fail if the equipment is grounded, but the automatic protection does not work. After all, the spiral will be shortened at the same time, and the released power will increase significantly as a result. This will cause the metal filament to simply melt.

Also, the spiral will instantly burn out if there is a touch to the surface of the tube in more than two places, there is no grounding and RCD, and the circuit breaker will not have time to trip.

If we summarize all of the above, then malfunctions of heating elements can be of two types:

- breakage (melting) of the nichrome spiral, - its short circuit to the tubular metal shell.

IMPORTANT! Often in modern household appliances, malfunctions cannot be eliminated, since the heating element is welded or soldered to the device case. The only way out is to purchase a new electrical appliance.

Electric heating boiler power calculation

»Heating» Electric heating boiler power calculation

The boiler is the main unit of the heating system, the performance of which determines the ability of the engineering network to provide the structure with the required amount of heat. A competent preliminary calculation of the power of the heating system guarantees a comfortable microclimate in the room and will help to eliminate unnecessary costs when purchasing it.

Basic calculation of the power of an electric heat generator

Definition! The power of an electric heating unit must fully replenish the heat loss of all rooms. If necessary, the power that will be spent on heating the water is taken into account.

Professional calculation of the power of electric heating equipment takes into account the following factors:

  • Average temperature during the coldest period of the year.
  • Insulation characteristics of materials used in the construction of building envelopes.
  • Heating circuit wiring type.
  • The ratio of the total area of door and window openings and the area of supporting structures.
  • Specific information about each heated room - the number of corner walls, the estimated number of radiators, etc.

Attention! To perform particularly accurate calculations, household appliances, the number of computers and video equipment that also generate heat are taken into account. Usually, professional calculations are rarely carried out, and when buying, a unit is chosen whose power exceeds the approximately calculated value

Usually, professional calculations are rarely carried out, and when buying, they choose a unit whose power exceeds the approximately calculated value.

For an approximate calculation of power (W), the following formula is used:

W = S * Wsp / 10m2, where S is the area of the heated building in m2.

Wsp is the specific power of the unit, the value of which is individual for each region:

  • for a cold climate - 1.2-2.0;
  • for the middle band - 1.0-1.2;
  • for the southern regions - 0.7-0.9.

Determination of the power required to supply hot water

The power required to heat water for technical needs is determined by the number of permanent consumers, water points, the total amount of warm water used.

Advice! To roughly determine the power of a heating unit operating simultaneously for heating water, add 20% to the calculated power for heating the room. In cases of frequent drawdown, the power is increased by 25%.

Calculation of the volume of the storage water heater

If it is planned to use a storage water heater in conjunction with an electric heating system, then its volume (Vv) can be calculated using the following formula:

Vw = V * (T-T ') * (T ”-T'), where V is the required amount of heated water, T is the required temperature of heated water, T 'is the temperature of the water to which hot water is mixed from the heater, T” - the temperature of the water heated in the water heater.

Having selected the power of the electric heating installation, and having determined the volume of the water heater, using the formula, you can calculate how long (T, sec) the water will be heated:

Т = m * CB * (t2-t1) / P, where m is the mass (kg) of water in the storage tank, CB is the specific heat capacity of water, which is taken equal to 4.2 kJ / (kg * K), t2 and t1 - the final and initial water temperature in the boiler, respectively, P is the power of the heating unit, kW.

Additional factors taken into account when calculating the power of an electric boiler

The operation of any heat generator, including an electric one, may be accompanied by additional losses:

  • If the house building is ventilated too intensively, then due to the accelerated air exchange, the premises will lose about 15% of the heat.
  • Weak wall insulation can cause a loss of 35% of thermal energy.
  • About 10% of the heat goes through the window frames, and if the windows are old, then this amount can be even more.
  • Uninsulated floors will reduce heat supply to rooms by about 15% more.
  • About a quarter of the heat can be lost through an improperly arranged roof structure.

Attention! If at least one of the factors of unproductive heat losses is present in the heated room, then it must be taken into account when calculating the power. https://www.youtube.com/embed/_n_cZSAT4ZE

If desired, the calculation of the required power and the required volume can be carried out using an online calculator that takes into account all the characteristics of the heated object as much as possible.

How to determine the health of the heating element? Typical malfunctions

The element is installed in the washing machine tank for heating water. The machine performs three main functions: fills in, heats and drains water. In the process, pollution is influenced by several factors:

  • The laundry is treated with a detergent.
  • It is exposed to thermal and mechanical stress.

The result is heat, powder, and a spinning drum that helps remove dirt and get clean items out of the tank. It is worth excluding one element, and washing will cease to be so effective.

You can make sure that the heating element is malfunctioning without a tester by external signs:

  • After 20 minutes of washing, the glass of the door is cold.
  • Traces of powder remain on things, the granules do not dissolve well.
  • The laundry has an unpleasant musty smell.

What affects the performance of the heating element? This is the quality of tap water and the stability of the voltage in the network. If your water contains a lot of magnesium and potassium salts, it is recommended to install filters. Otherwise, when heated, the salts are deposited on the spirals. Over time, the scale turns to stone, disrupts heat transfer and the part burns out.

How to check (ring) ten?

Here are some of the problems specific to the element:

  • Breakdown to the case. Dangerous malfunction that could result in electric shock. The casing insulation is broken and the heater breaks through. Modern CMA models have a built-in security system that displays an error code on the display.
  • Break. It happens when there is a sudden power surge in the network. The machine may freeze during the heating phase or not start the cycle at all.
  • Closure. In this case, the machine can be knocked out in the room. You can no longer operate the equipment. Repair required.

If you suspect a breakdown of the heating coil, proceed with the diagnosis with a multimeter.

How to remove and ring a heating element?

It is necessary to find out which side the heater is located on. Examine the washer body. The large rear hatch is likely to hide behind a TEN. In the publication "How to replace the heating element in the CM" we gave an example of placing an element in different models.

Once you get to the part, disconnect the power wires from the contacts. For diagnostics, it is not necessary to dismantle the product.

How to check (ring) ten?

How to check a heating element in a washing machine with a tester:

Calculate the resistance of the part. It may differ for each manufacturer. To do this, take the operating voltage (220 V) and power (indicated in the manual). For example, the power is 1800 W. Make a calculation using the formula: R = 220² / 1800 = 26.8. It turns out that the normal resistance of the heating element should be 26.8 ohms.

Checking the operation of the heating element of the washing machine with a multimeter is carried out as follows:

  • Set the toggle switch to detect resistance.
  • If the screen shows normal values (about 26.8), then the part is working properly.
  • The number 1 on the screen indicates a break in the spiral. The product cannot be repaired, only replacement is needed.
  • A value of 0 means closure.

Now you need to check for a breakdown to the case.

Switch the tester toggle switch to buzzer mode. Attach one probe to the contact and the other to ground. A squeak of a buzzer means a breakdown. The heater must be replaced without fail.

How to check (ring) ten?

When replacing a part, remember the heating element connection diagram. During the disassembly process, you can photograph the stages of work. Here is a detailed video of the verification:

Checking the heating element for breakdown on the case

If the multimeter shows the correct value, but the water does not heat up, then it is worth checking the breakdown of the part on the case. With this phenomenon, sparks can be observed under the appliance during the washing process. It is very dangerous. To check, the multimeter should be put into dial mode. The device should beep. After that, the indicators on the multimeter will light up. One end of the device should touch the heating element terminal, and the other - to the body or to the grounding terminal. If the multimeter starts beeping, then the heating element is defective and must be replaced.

Tubular electric heater (TEN) is a metal tube of arbitrary shape, in which a spiral of nichrome wire with leads at the ends is installed. To isolate the coil and transfer heat from it, the tube is filled with quartz sand. The heating element has no polarity, therefore it does not matter to which terminal the phases are connected, and to which zero.

Practically in any modern electric heating devices, such as an electric kettle, an iron, an automatic washing machine, a heater and others, tubular electric heating elements, which are abbreviated as heating elements, are used as a heat source. This is a simple and reliable element capable of serving for many decades, subject to the rules of operation. But the rules are not always respected, and heating elements are of poor quality and therefore fail.
