  • smokeless devices operate from the mains.

Typically pressurized gas water heaters with a coaxial chimney are equipped with an electric ignition system with electrodes to generate a spark. But in some types of columns, a mechanical hydrogenerator is involved, which generates energy from a moving water stream. Based on the features of the devices, it can be seen that they are endowed with many functions that increase the comfort and safety of operation.

Types of storage water heaters - 3 main sources of energy

By the type of energy used, water heaters can be divided into 3 types:

  1. Electrical

The water in the tank is heated using an electric heater, usually these are replaceable tubular electric heaters (TENs). They are dry or wet. As the name implies, some have contact with the heated liquid, while others do not.

  1. Gas water heaters (boilers)

Heating of water in the tank occurs from the combustion of liquefied or main (natural) gas in the combustion chamber. Depending on the combustion method, a distinction is made between closed or open types of chambers.

Modern devices operating on gas have a sufficiently high efficiency, therefore, during operation, the emission of exhaust gases into the atmosphere is minimal. For this, special coaxial-type chimneys are used.

  1. Combined water heaters

For heating, (usually) 2 types of heat energy are used. In most cases, these are heating elements and indirect heating from the coolant. Indirect heating occurs due to the coolant, which, passing its way along the first circuit, gives off heating energy to the water in the second circuit. And indirect is called so, because the heating of the coolant is heated from another source, which can be a boiler, a solar system, a heat pump, etc.

Supercharged unit operation

All gas flow structures operate according to the same principle: when the hot water valve in the apparatus is opened, the burner ignites under the flow pressure and begins to heat the liquid circulating through the heat exchanger. In a smokeless appliance the process happens a little differently:

  1. While in standby mode, the device is connected to the mains. There is no combustion process in the chamber, since there is no igniter.
  2. When the mixer tap is opened, the flow sensor and the membrane of the water unit are turned on. Under its action, a valve is triggered, which opens gas access to the burner mechanism.
  3. The controller sends a command to the electrodes located next to the burner, a spark appears, which ignites the gas. The sensor reacts to a flame and signals to the control unit that the formation of a spark stops, and at the same time the turbine that blows air is turned on.
  4. When the DHW tap is closed, the gas supply stops, the burner goes out, therefore the water heating process is completed.

Thanks to the improved design, the efficiency of the turbocharged unit reaches 88-90%, while the usual atmospheric 84%. Efficiency is determined by the following functions:

  • accurate metering of the supplied gas and air required for the combustion process;
  • maintaining the required temperature regime - a function that allows you to save gas, since the consumption for excessive heating is excluded;
  • preheating of the street air flow with a coaxial chimney.

This function is most effective in compensating for the heat that is carried away with the gas toxins. Cold air, flowing through the same pipe, only in a different plane, takes heat from the oncoming smoke waste through the steel wall of the inner pipe.

The gas water heater with a coaxial chimney is endowed with protective safety equipment. They work in situations like this:

  • lack of draft in the chimney due to the termination of the operation of the turbine, which stopped when the electricity was cut off;
  • the burner spontaneously went out;
  • reduced water consumption;
  • failure of the controller function.

The principle of operation of a storage water heater

Water heating is provided not only by the burner, but also by the removal of combustion products. The principle of operation is as follows: at a negative temperature in the room, a heating element is automatically turned on, powered by electricity, which heats the heat exchanger and does not freeze the water.

The anti-freeze function in the coaxial column will be useful in the event of an emergency shutdown of the heating system in winter. It will prevent expensive equipment from defrosting and failing.

Criteria for choosing a water heater


It is not allowed to install gas boilers with an open combustion chamber in the apartment.

When choosing a suitable model of a household gas water heater, first of all, attention is paid to its performance - the volume of heated water.The indicated value is usually given in the technical data sheet and is expressed in liters per minute when the liquid is heated to 25 ° C.

Boiler devices for obtaining hot water supply in their efficiency are somewhat inferior to gas heating boilers (no more than 3-5 percent). On the other hand, the efficiency of models of different classes (with an open and a closed chamber) is practically the same, so when choosing this indicator is not paid attention.

You will need to consider the following important points:

  • With a limited user budget and living in areas with frequent power outages, a simple non-volatile open-type model would be the best option. Its ignition system is powered by a piezoelectric element or from batteries located in a special compartment. They are usually enough for 2-3 months of intensive work.
  • According to the instructions for use, open-type systems are not allowed to be installed within the living spaces of modern apartments. In private houses, a separate room is allocated for them (analogous to a boiler room).
