What are wood stoves for?

If the room is equipped with a fireplace, you cannot do without a storage for firewood. Such a structure is called a fire pit. Its main purpose is storage of a stock of firewood.

Important! The woodpile is designed so that there is intensive ventilation of the wood. As a result, solid fuels are always dry. The firebox is designed for storing logs

If you come up with imagination to the manufacture of a structure, then it will play the role of decoration of a site or room with a fireplace. Beautiful woodpiles are made of forged elements, wooden structures are decorated with carvings.

Depending on the place of installation, the dimensions of the firebox for the fireplace differ. Small structures are placed indoors. They allow you to make a small supply of firewood, intended directly for current consumption. After all, it is more convenient to take a log from the firebox and immediately put it in the fireplace than to go outside for firewood every time you need a new load. Outside the premises, large woodpiles are erected, where you can store a supply of fuel for the entire season. They are equipped with a roof that protects solid fuel from precipitation.

Wood rack

This firewood rack is designed for indoor use. Small logs are stacked on top of each other in the closed arc part of the rack. The big advantage is that the firewood rack can be folded down, for example, in the summer when it is not needed. When folded, it takes up very little space, so it will not clutter up your garage or storage room. The bolts can be easily loosened with a hex wrench (8 hex head bolts M5 x 40 mm).

Manufacturing Procedure You need two metal rods 2 meters long (Ø 10 mm).

  1. 2 posts were bent with a bending machine as shown in the pictures. Cut off excess material with a saw.
  2. Mark the holes on the tape with a center punch, it is important that your drill does not slip when drilling the holes.
  3. Drill the holes with a 5.5 mm drill.
  4. Clean metal parts and paint, I used Ral 9005 Matte black spray.
  5. Hang the trellis on a string or something else to make it easier to paint.
  6. Make 4 round wooden handles (Ø 25 mm) 35 cm long Use a rasp to round off the ends of all pieces.
  7. Now it's time to drill the holes to install the uprights. For this you need a Ø 11 mm drill.
  8. Drill bolt holes to hold the parts together. To do this, use a Ø 4.5 mm drill bit, so that later you can make a screw thread inside the holes.

As you put the pieces together, you will notice that the holes are not as smooth as they used to be because you removed the material. Make them round. Then sand the surface. If you want the bolts to be recessed, use a thick drill bit to drill 3mm deep holes on the sides. To carve wood, use a screw head drill (M5) in the holes you made on the sides. The holes were drilled in a smaller size (Ø 4.5 mm) so that the threads inside the hole could be cut.

Now you can use 8 bolts to connect all the pieces. (8 recessed hex head bolts M5 x 40mm)

Manufacturing material

When assembling a firebox, the material is selected taking into account its location, size, decorativeness. Usually they use metal or wood. If in the yard there are old barrels left over from the construction of sewerage concrete rings, they can also be adapted for storage of firewood. However, it will be possible to install such woodpiles only on the street.

The most common types of wood burning boxes are:

  1. Most often, they build a wooden firebox for the fireplace with their own hands, since the material is accessible and easy to process. The disadvantage is the short service life. However, if you approach the matter skillfully, a beautiful structure will become a real decorative element. In addition, the wood firebox fits into any corner of the yard or the interior of the room. Wooden woodpile is easy to make
Advice! When processing wood with protective impregnations and staining, it will be possible to extend the service life of the firebox, to preserve its attractive appearance.
  2. Metal woodpiles are especially durable. They fit perfectly into the interior of the room if the fireplace is decorated with wrought iron elements. The only drawback is that the metal firebox is very heavy. On mobile, this is not the best material. If the structure is built large for outdoor installation, it must be painted. Without protection, the metal is susceptible to corrosion. The metal woodpile is reliable, but its manufacture will require experience in welding

A separate type is a wicker firebox. In terms of material, it is closer to wooden structures, but the manufacturing technology itself is different. Woodpiles are weaved from vines. They are usually small in size, in demand when delivering firewood to the fireplace for 1-2 loads.

Wicker woodpiles are used when carrying a small amount of firewood.

Style solutions

When purchasing a fireplace, very often a firebox is also included in the set. This is a very nice bonus, and quite a profitable option, because such accessories for the fireplace are made in the same style and design. Very often, such fire boxes are portable, which is also a big plus. In addition, a fireplace or stove and a wood-burning stove made in the same style will look great in the interior, they will add a special twist to it.
A vertical mini firebox will look very stylish and tasteful. It will become not only a stand for storing firewood, but also a great addition to your cozy home. It will look perfect next to a fireplace or stove.

Stopping your choice on forged firewoods, you can choose not only intricate and delicate options, but also those that are made in the style of minimalism. The main thing is that all wood burning boxes made of metal will be a very good solution for your country house. Not only for aesthetic needs, but also for safety.

An unusual solution can be the choice of various abstract wood burning stoves for the house. For example, a herringbone-shaped wooden firebox will look very interesting. Most manufacturers of fireplaces, stoves and accessories for them offer a huge range of different wood burning stoves. For every fastidious taste. You can definitely choose what you need exactly. And if you want to make your own individual design, then you can easily try to make a wood burning stove with your own hands.

Very often fireplaces already have “built-in fireboxes”. Storage space for firewood. With this option, an additional firebox is most often not needed. If you have decided to lay the fireplace yourself, then it is quite possible to make a place for storing firewood in its lower part.

Types of wood burning stoves for a fireplace

In addition to differences in material, firebeds are divided into several more types. In terms of dimensions, woodpiles are portable and stationary, and at the place of installation - outdoor and indoor.

Street storage resembles a barn

On the street, a large firebox is installed for the fireplace, where the fuel supply for the entire season is placed. A barn is suitable for logs, but it has many disadvantages. Due to the lack of good ventilation, the firewood will be damp. In the voids between the logs, rats and mice organize their nests in winter. A real street woodpile for a fireplace has the floor raised above the ground. The wood is protected from moisture from below and at the same time ventilated. There is ventilation even in the walls and under the roof.

The room firebox serves as a stand for firewood

Inside the room, right next to the fireplace, there is a room firebox. The design is easier to call a firewood stand. It is usually small in size, holds a supply of solid fuel for several loads into the fireplace. There are special requirements for indoor mini-woodpiles. Here, more emphasis is placed on decorativeness. The firebox should fit into the interior of the room, become an integral part of it.

A stationary firebox cannot be moved to another place

A stationary woodpile in street design is a large and massive structure that cannot be rearranged to another place. This can be a structure in the form of a barn, a device made of barrels or concrete rings. Inside the premises, stationary firewoods are also installed, but they are small. Usually this is one or two niches in the wall. Woodpiles are often part of the fireplace. One niche is made below the firebox, and the other is made on the side.

Mobile fire boxes are lightweight and small in size

Mobile woodpiles are designed to deliver firewood from outdoor storage to the fireplace. They are distinguished by their low weight and compact dimensions. They make such a wood stove for a fireplace with a carrier, that is, devices in the form of handles. Sometimes the stand is equipped with casters to increase its mobility. However, the mobile model is convenient if there is a free passage with a hard surface without obstacles from the fireplace to the street firebox.

How to make a wood burning stove for a fireplace with your own hands

Before you start making a woodpile, you need to decide on its type. The fireplace is not designed to heat the entire house. More often it plays a decorative role, heats only one room. Little firewood is required. Proceeding from the fact that for current loads the fuel needs to be stored by the fireplace, the mini-firebox will have to be made in any case. To store the main stock on the street, you can adapt a barrel for firewood.

In the video, ideas for street fire boxes:

Diy firebox for a fireplace made of wood and plywood

According to an accessible idea, the room stand is made of wood. Moreover, you can use not only an array, but also multilayer plywood. A jigsaw, drill, plane, sandpaper or grinder are prepared from the tools. Of the materials you need slats, a sheet of plywood.

  1. Do-it-yourself assembly of a mini-firebox for a fireplace begins by cutting out the base. On a sheet of plywood, a figure is drawn in the shape of an ellipse of about 90 × 40 cm. 5 cm recede from two opposite edges, holes are drilled to fix the handle.
  2. To give the body a spherical shape, the cut ellipse is placed in a bath, filled with hot water and left for 1 hour. During this time, the plywood will swell and become elastic.
  3. They are trying to bend the workpiece. They do this carefully so as not to break. If the plywood does not lend itself to bending, it is still immersed in hot water for 30 minutes. The actions are repeated until it turns out to bend the hemisphere.
  4. After bending, two opposite sides are connected with a handle. Holes have already been pre-drilled for it. Stands are cut out of two slats. They will ensure the stability of the wood box, will not allow it to swing on the floor.

With such a firebox, it is convenient to walk outside for firewood, taking it by the handle like a wallet.Near the fireplace, the stand will additionally act as a decorative element. To give a decent look, the product is sanded, opened with stain, varnish or drying oil.

Diy metal fireplace firebox

The durable and fireproof version is made of metal. When manufacturing, you will need a welding machine and experience in welding. The material of the frame of a portable wood burning stove for a fireplace will be rods with a thickness of 5 mm. The bottom sewing can be done with tin or braided with thin wire.

  1. The assembly of the attribute for the fireplace begins with the manufacture of the frame. Two rings are bent from long rods. Diameter is optional, but usually 50 cm will be sufficient. To prevent the rings from separating, the edges of the rods are welded together. Now from these two blanks it is necessary to form a body, consisting of a transport handle and the stand itself for storing firewood.
  2. The two rings are folded together. At one point, they are temporarily tied with wire. On the opposite side of the ligament, the rings are spread on the sides at a distance of 12 cm. The workpiece is fixed on the welding table with clamps.
  3. At the point where the wire is twisted, the rings are welded together. On the opposite side, the divorced rings are welded together with jumpers made of rods. You will get the base of the bottom of the stand. Two long or four small loops are welded from below, forming legs.
  4. The bottom can be simply sheathed with tin. To make a decorative firebox for a fireplace look presentable, its lower part is not covered with metal, but braided with wire. In this embodiment, it is advisable to weld two more arcs from rods between the jumpers to strengthen the bottom. The finished structure is painted most often in classic white or black.

Firebox from an old barrel

The entire supply of firewood cannot be stacked by the fireplace. Another storage facility will have to be built on the street. As a way out of the situation, an old steel barrel will do. The larger its diameter, the more spacious the firebox will turn out.

First of all, the bottom and lid are removed from the barrel. Fragments can be cut with a chisel and hammer, but it will be faster to cut it off with a grinder. The remaining metal ring will act as the body of the firebox. The logs will be well ventilated due to the draft.

Inside the barrel, sheets of metal divide the space. The sections are convenient for storing fuel for various purposes. For example, in one compartment there are large logs, and the other is loaded with small things for kindling.

To prevent the barrel from rolling on the ground, the legs are welded from below. You can simply cut wood stands or arrange cinder block stops. For aesthetics and protection against corrosion, the structure is painted.
